Samsung Galaxy A27 5G

The Samsung Galaxy A27 5G is available at City Hub Electronics, Nairobi. Its strongest feature is not on the spec sheet in the usual sense: six major Android upgrades on a mid-range phone is the longest support commitment at this price from any brand, and it means a phone bought today still receives new Android versions well into the 2030s.

Camera

The main camera is a 50MP wide at f/1.8 on a 1/2.76 inch sensor with 0.64 micron pixels, with phase detection autofocus and optical image stabilisation. Optical stabilisation at this price is the specification worth paying for, because it buys roughly two to three stops in low light and steadies handheld video.

The second lens is a 5MP ultrawide at f/2.2 on a very small 1/5.0 inch sensor. It is a daylight-only lens, and cutting between it and the main camera will show an obvious drop in detail and noise handling.

The third is a 2MP macro. Be straight with customers about this one: 2MP macro sensors on mid-range phones contribute very little and exist mainly to make a camera array look like three cameras. The main sensor cropped in will usually produce a better close-up.

The front camera is a 12MP f/2.2 unit. LED flash, panorama and HDR round out the camera app.

In practice this is a one-good-camera phone, and that one camera is genuinely good for the money. Set expectations there rather than on the triple-camera badge.

Video Recording

Resolutions and Frame Rates

The rear camera records 4K at 30fps and 1080p at 30fps. There is also a 720p mode at 480fps for slow motion.

There is no 4K at 60fps and no 1080p at 60fps, which is the clearest video limitation. Everything delivers at 30fps unless you drop to 720p for the slow-motion mode, so smooth motion and post-production speed changes are not really available here.

The 12MP front camera records 1080p at 30fps only. For a creator shooting pieces to camera, that is a real ceiling, and the Poco X8 Pro or Infinix Note 60 Pro are better choices at a similar level.

Stabilisation

Optical image stabilisation on the 50MP main camera works alongside gyroscope-driven electronic stabilisation. For a phone in this bracket that combination is unusual and it makes handheld 4K genuinely usable.

The 5MP ultrawide and 2MP macro have no optical stabilisation.

Colour and Dynamic Range

The 6.7-inch Super AMOLED runs at 120Hz. GSMArena measured maximum brightness at 800 nits, which is adequate indoors and in shade but modest against the 3,000 nit-plus panels now appearing at this price from Poco and Infinix.

In direct Nairobi sun, judging exposure on this screen is harder than on those rivals. Worth mentioning to a customer who shoots outdoors.

Recording is a conventional 8-bit pipeline with no 10-bit or log option.

Power

A 5,000 mAh battery with 25W wired charging, reaching 45 percent in 30 minutes. GSMArena’s active use score came in at 12 hours 41 minutes, which is solid rather than exceptional.

Charging is the weak point against current competition. Several phones in this bracket now charge at 45W to 100W, so 25W feels dated, and there is no wireless charging.

The EU energy label rates the battery at 51 hours 10 minutes endurance over 1,200 charge cycles, and the phone carries a Class A energy rating.

Storage

Two configurations are stocked: 128GB with 6GB of RAM, and 256GB with 8GB of RAM. Samsung also produces a 128GB with 8GB variant in some markets. Storage is UFS 3.1 with LPDDR5X memory, both a step up from the A26.

Importantly, the A27 keeps a microSDXC card slot, which uses the shared SIM slot so you choose between a second SIM and expandable storage. Several pre-launch reports claimed Samsung had removed it; the shipping phone has it.

That card slot changes the buying advice. The 128GB model plus a large microSD card is usually better value than paying up to 256GB, particularly for a customer storing photos and video rather than installing large games.

Editing

The Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 on a 4 nanometre process, with four Cortex-A78 cores at 2.4GHz, four Cortex-A55 at 1.8GHz and an Adreno 710 GPU, handles editing apps competently at this level. GSMArena recorded an AnTuTu v10 score of 694,659 and a GeekBench 6 score of 2,973.

The headline software fact is support length. The A27 ships on Android 16 with One UI 8.5 and carries up to six major Android upgrades, which would carry it to Android 22. Nothing else in this price bracket comes close, and it is the strongest argument for choosing this phone over a faster-on-paper rival.

For a customer who keeps a phone four or five years, that support window is worth more than the benchmark difference.

Audio

There is a single loudspeaker rather than a stereo pair, which is a genuine step down from the stereo setups common at this price. GSMArena measured loudness at -26.4 LUFS, rated Good.

There is no 3.5mm jack and no FM radio. External microphones connect over USB-C 2.0 with OTG support.

The USB port is USB 2.0, so offloading a large shoot to a computer is slow and a card reader will often be faster, which is another practical reason the microSD slot matters.

Design and Build

The A27 measures 162.4 x 78.2 x 7.8 mm and weighs 200 g. The build is better than the price suggests: Gorilla Glass Victus+ on both the front and the back, rated Mohs level 5 for scratch resistance, with a plastic frame between them.

One point to raise honestly. The A27 is rated IP64, which covers dust ingress and water splashes only. The Galaxy A26 it replaces was rated IP67, which covered immersion. That is a step backwards in water protection, and a customer upgrading from an A26 should know before they buy.

The display is a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED at 1080 x 2340 in a 19.5:9 ratio, roughly 385 ppi, running at 120Hz with an 86.8 percent screen-to-body ratio.

The fingerprint sensor is side-mounted rather than under the display, which some customers actively prefer for speed and reliability. Proximity sensing is virtual rather than a dedicated sensor.

Colours are Black, Blue, Light Green and Light Pink.
