Apple iPhone Duo

The Apple iPhone Duo is coming to City Hub Electronics, Nairobi. It is Apple’s first foldable iPhone, opening to a 7.6-inch inner display that Apple says is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and closing to a 5.4-inch outer display with 90 percent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro. For creators, the folding design is not a novelty here: it enables shooting yourself on the far better rear cameras while watching a live preview on the outer screen.

Status as of 9 September 2026: Apple announced iPhone Duo today, and every specification on this page comes from Apple’s own launch announcement. Apple has not yet published the full technical specifications, so dimensions, weight, memory, display resolutions and aperture values are deliberately not listed rather than estimated. Kenyan stock and pricing are not yet confirmed.

Camera

The rear system is a dual camera, and it is important to be clear about that rather than let the price imply otherwise. There is a 48MP Fusion Main and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, which Apple states is the same unit used on the iPhone 18 Pro models.

The 48MP Fusion Main shoots at up to 48MP with zero shutter lag, defaults to 24MP for a more shareable file size, and carries an integrated optical-quality 2x Telephoto. That 2x comes from cropping into the sensor, not from a separate lens. There is no dedicated telephoto camera on the iPhone Duo, so anyone who needs real optical reach is better served by the iPhone 18 Pro models.

Apple also does not describe variable aperture on this camera. The six-blade variable aperture is the headline feature of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s iPhone Duo announcement does not claim it. The Main camera is credited with a large sensor, a fast aperture and sensor-shift optical image stabilisation, plus the new computational image pipeline.

The Ultra Wide handles wider fields of view and macro photography. The Center Stage front camera can take photos and video in any orientation, so landscape selfies no longer require rotating the phone, and a second FaceTime camera sits hidden beneath the inner display, invisible when not in use.

The genuinely new capabilities come from the two screens working together. Duo Preview puts a live preview on the outer display, so your subject can see their own framing while you shoot on the rear cameras. Combined with the ability to take a selfie on the higher-resolution rear lenses, it removes the usual compromise where self-shot content is captured on the weaker front camera.

Smart Take uses on-device AI on the A20 Pro to watch a scene and fire the shutter automatically when subjects are posing, which replaces the timer scramble. Kid Cue plays Peanuts animations on the outer display to get children to look at the lens. Duo FaceTime lets someone beside you join a call on the outer display rather than crowding one screen.

Video Recording

Resolutions and Frame Rates

The 48MP Fusion Main records 4K at 120fps in Dolby Vision. That is the specification that matters most: 4K120 gives a 5x conform against a 24fps timeline, so a single clip serves as both normal-speed coverage and full-resolution slow motion, with the playback speed adjustable after capture rather than fixed at the moment of recording.

Cinematic effects can be applied after capture to footage shot at up to 60fps, moving that creative decision into the edit. Time-lapse records in 4K with Dolby Vision HDR.

One point of honesty for anyone comparing this against the iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro: Apple’s iPhone Duo announcement does not mention ProRes, ProRes RAW, Apple Log or Genlock. Those formats were central to the iPhone 17 Pro’s case as a professional B camera. We are not claiming them here, and if a professional video pipeline is the reason you are buying, confirm it before committing.

Stabilisation

The 48MP Fusion Main uses sensor-shift optical image stabilisation.

The folding body is its own tripod, and Apple makes the point directly: the phone can be propped up to shoot longer time-lapses without support. For a solo creator shooting talking-head content, product turntables or long exposures, that removes a piece of kit from the bag.

The advanced thermal system matters here too. A custom vapor chamber connected directly to A20 Pro sustains up to 35 percent better performance than iPhone 17 Pro, and sustained performance is exactly what long 4K120 recordings consume.

Colour and Dynamic Range

Recording on the Main camera is in Dolby Vision. Both displays reach 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness with ProMotion and Always On, so exposure can be judged on location rather than guessed at.

The inner display carries a nano-texture finish that reduces glare and reflections. On a matte panel this bright, reviewing footage outdoors is materially easier than on a glossy screen, and the same finish minimises how visible the crease is.

Audio Mix has new algorithms delivering higher-quality voices, and can now isolate music as a separate layer, which recovers takes recorded at events and venues where dialogue and music were previously locked together.

Zoom, Framing and Capture Modes

Camera Control launches the camera directly from the side of the device, including the new Siri Camera mode, which lets Siri see what you see to answer questions and act on what is in frame.

Dual Capture in FaceTime shares the front and rear camera feeds at the same time.

Upgraded Photographic Styles add texture and grain controls, so colour and skin qualities can be adjusted together for a consistent look across a body of work.

Power

The iPhone Duo uses a dual-battery architecture, one high-energy cell on each side of the fold, with energy rebalancing algorithms letting them behave as a single battery.

Apple rates it at up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, up to 44 hours on the outer display, and up to 24 hours of usage per charge when both displays are used equally. Those are three different numbers for three different ways of using the phone, and the 24 hour figure is the realistic one to quote a customer.

Fast charging reaches 50 percent in around 20 minutes wired, or 50 percent in around 30 minutes wirelessly with a MagSafe or Qi2 charger. The wired figure needs a 60W-capable USB-C cable with a USB PD adapter, and the wireless figure needs a 35W or higher adapter with a MagSafe Charger. All sold separately, and an older cable will not deliver it.

Storage

The iPhone Duo is offered in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. There is no expandable storage.

4K120 Dolby Vision consumes space quickly, so if video is the reason you are buying, treat 512GB as the practical minimum rather than the upgrade.

Note that Apple has not published the memory configuration, so RAM is not listed here.

Editing

The larger inner display is the strongest argument for editing on this device. Split View opens two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time, and you can open two windows of the same app, save app pairs to return to, and hold a conversation with Siri AI on one side while working on the other.

iOS 27 has been rebuilt for the form factor rather than stretched to fit. Lock Screen controls, the Dock and app navigation move to the side to free vertical space for content, the Dynamic Island is redesigned to sit vertically along the edge of both displays, and content reorients as the phone folds, turns or is flipped over.

A20 Pro is the same chip as the iPhone 18 Pro models, on a 2 nanometre process, with a 6-core CPU up to 20 percent faster than A19 Pro, a 7-core GPU up to 40 percent faster, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine with double the compute for on-device AI, and 50 percent more unified memory bandwidth. A new display engine drives both panels at once.

Netflix, Zoom and Slack have already adapted to the folding design, and StandBy now works off-charge, turning a propped-up phone into a photo frame, clock or widget hub. Apple Pencil with USB-C support arrives later this year and works on either display.

Audio

Audio Mix has been rebuilt with new algorithms for higher-quality voice reproduction and can separate music into its own adjustable layer.

Apple’s announcement does not detail the microphone array or speaker configuration, so those are not claimed here.

There is no 3.5mm jack. External microphones connect over USB-C or wirelessly, and for dialogue-led content a wireless lavalier remains the single biggest quality upgrade you can make.

Design and Build

Opened, the iPhone Duo is the thinnest iPhone Apple has made. The inner Super Retina XDR display measures 7.6 inches, or 7.58 inches measured as a standard rectangle, and the outer display is 5.4 inches, or 5.36 inches measured the same way. Both share an aspect ratio, so content scales proportionally between them.

The enclosure is grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish and a 3D-printed hinge cover in a contrasting micro-blasted finish. Ceramic Shield protects the back, and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front offers three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation.

It is rated IP68, tested to a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes. That is a significant point of difference against the Samsung foldables in the catalogue, which are rated IP48 and are not protected against fine dust. For coastal and dusty conditions in Kenya, this is the more robust folding phone.

The hinge uses more than 100 components, with internal support ribs and antenna splits with ceramic fibre inserts adding rigidity. The inner display has a scratch-resistant coating and a nano-textured cover layer made from a custom polymer up to 40 percent stiffer than industry alternatives, with high-strength glass above and below the panel, custom adhesives that let the layers glide past each other like the pages of a book, and a titanium plate beneath.

One change to raise with customers directly: the iPhone Duo uses Touch ID built into the side button, not Face ID. Apple frames this as consistent authentication whether the phone is open or closed, and the phone can also be unlocked with an Apple Watch. If a customer is coming from a Face ID iPhone, they should know before they buy.

Colours are star white and night sky. The phone is made with 35 percent recycled content, including 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery and 100 percent recycled titanium in the hinge cover, and is manufactured with 60 percent renewable energy.
